SOUTH MIMMS, HERTFORDSHIRE

A blend of traditional and modern in this minimalist garden in South Mimms, showing the understated, calming beauty achieved by a limited colour palette and plant species, in white, pink and burgundy.

Severely waterlogged, sitting on heavy clay,  and at a much lower level than the surrounding fields and adjacent paddock, with banks on three sides, this garden presented a number of challenges.

The initial brief was to resolve the acute drainage problem and design front and back gardens with a linear, simple layout to reflect the style of the newly refurbished house.

The client’s specifications for the back garden included a large lawn area, a patio extending onto the lawn to accommodate a table and seating for 8-10 people and a mobile barbecue.

The desired palette of white and pink informed the selection of flowering trees and shrubs, with roses, camellias, magnolias, hydrangeas, peonies and rhododendrons planted in their own designated areas. Hundreds of tulips and white daffodils complete the planting scheme for early and late spring colour.
